What to Pack for your Hospital Stay

Whether you’re prepping for an upcoming procedure, helping a family member, or just keeping a “go-bag” ready for peace of mind, having a structured list is essential.

Given your busy life I’ve prepared a comprehensive checklist designed for an overnight or extended stay.

The Essentials Paperwork, ID and Insurance Cards: Driver’s license and health insurance/pharmacy cards.

List of Medications: Include dosages and the time you last took them. (Don’t bring the actual bottles unless instructed, as hospitals often require you to use their pharmacy).

Medical Contacts: Names and numbers for your primary care doctor and any specialists.

Important Documents Copies of your Power of Attorney or Advanced Directive if you have them.

Personal Comfort & ClothingLoose, Comfortable Clothes: Think oversize t-shirts, loose pants, pajama dress, for the ride home. Avoid anything with complicated buttons or tight waistbands.

Grippy Socks or Slippers: Hospital floors are cold and can be slippery.

Your Own Pillow: Use a brightly colored pillowcase so it doesn’t get lost in the hospital laundry.

Eye Mask and Earplugs: Hospitals are notoriously bright and noisy at 3:00 AM.

Toiletries (The “Feel Human” Kit):

Lip Balm & Lotion: Hospital air is incredibly drying.

Travel-sized Toiletries: Toothbrush, toothpaste, deodorant, and face wash.

Hair Ties/Headband: To keep hair out of your face.

Unscented Cleansing Wipes: For a “dry shower” when you can’t get out of bed.

Tech & EntertainmentLong Charging Cable (10ft): Outlets are rarely right next to the bed.

Tablet or Kindle: Perfect for catching up on your blogging or watching an F1 race.

Noise-Canceling Headphones: Essential for blocking out beeping monitors and hallway chatter.5

The “Support Person” Bag

If someone is staying with you:

Small Blanket: The “pull-out” chairs are often thin.

Cash/Quarters: For vending machines or the cafeteria.

Snacks: High-protein snacks like nuts or granola bars to avoid relying on hospital food.
